Lewis Case was among the many who turned out for the seventh annual Summer Strawberry Festival at Folts Homes on Saturday.
“I just had a strawberry sundae,” he said. “I enjoyed it very much.”
Friends and family visited with Case, a resident at Folts Homes Health Center, in conjunction with the festival.
“It’s a great day for residents and their families,” said Linda Cardarelli, Folts Homes director of development. “They can come out and enjoy shopping and a bite to eat. It’s also a great way to get the community involved with us and get them familiar with us.”
Cardarelli said the fundraiser for the nursing home and rehabilitation facility will help provide for a summer concert series called “Concerts on the Lawn.” The first event is planned for Wednesday and will feature Fritz’s Polka Band.
“The community is so generous to us,” said Cardarelli, noting Folts Homes also received food donations for the event.
Strawberry sundaes and strawberry shortcake were among the top attractions for visitors, but there was more to the festival than just the strawberries.
Children were able to bounce inside the bouncy house or have their face painted like their favorite animal. Cassie Nipe, of Waterville, had her face painted like a Panda because they are her favorite.
Several vendors were also at the festival, some of whom sold craft items made by Folts Homes residents. Also, information booths for the Herkimer police D.A.R.E. program and the Herkimer Now committee were at the festival. There was also a visit by the Utica Zoomobile, games for children to play and live musical entertainment from Two Old Cowboys.
The festival used to coincide with strawberry season, said Cardarelli on how the event got its name, but was moved to coordinate with the past General Herkimer Days events and the Herkimer Area Resource Center’s “Life is Beautiful” celebration.
“It’s more like blueberry season,” said Cardarelli.
