Salisbury Center, N.Y. —
The town of Salisbury celebrated its annual Covered Bridge Day this past weekend. The festivities kicked of on Friday and continued all day Saturday.
A military hospital skit was featured at Salisbury Center Grange No. 624. Actors re-created how town churches, granges and even homes could have been taken over by military medics during the Civil War. The skit featured a military surgeon tending to war inflicted wounds and performing a number of amputations, the best and fastest treatment during the war.
Civil War general re-enactor and member of the 6 New York Calvary Field David Fritschi said, “What we’re trying to do is give a good picture of one of the darkest times in our nation. A military takeover was very common to experience during the Civil War. Anyone anywhere could have had their homes taken over in a matter of seconds.”
A Chinese auction featuring a number of different prizes, including a Kindle Fire Nook and two Adirondack chairs, and a Duck Derby which featured cash prizes were also part of the day.
Covered Bridge Committee Chair Kathleen Mowers said, “All of the money raised from the auction will goe toward the Covered Bridge Day’s fund for next year’s event.”
Relay For Life Team Red also conducted a raffle featuring a Nook tablet, a Barnes and Nobles gift card, gift baskets and quilts. Additionally, the team partnered with the Universalist church to offer a raffle for a Stewart’s gift card.
The New York State Covered Bridge Society was represented the event. New York State Covered Bridge Society Historian David Guay said, “The Salisbury Center covered bridge is the last authentic covered bridge in Herkimer County.” The bridge was built in 1875 by Alvah Hopson.
“The goal of the New York State Covered Bridge Society is to raise funds to preserve the covered bridges,” added Guay, of Glens Falls.
The Sailsbury Volunteer Fire Department provided food at the Gerald J. Kroutt Field House. Event-goers stopped by for hamburgers, hot dogs and more. Girl Scout Troop No. 781 ran a booth featuring face painting, Frisbee spin art, snacks and the cutest baby contest.
Horse drawn wagon rides were also offered. The 15-minute wagon rides began at the Salisbury Volunteer Fire Department and went through the town and to the covered bridge.
Many local vendors at the event offered crafts, jewelry, jams and more.
