Officials at a local manufacturing company are crediting teamwork with its recent statewide recognition.
Helmont Mills was certified by the state Department of Labor’s SHARP Program for its exemplary safety standards.
“I’m very proud of the people working as a team effort to achieve this goal,” said Charlie Sammons, plant manager at Helmont Mills. “This didn’t come easy and there was a lot of extra effort. It was quite an accomplishment for a small company such as us.”
According to its website, the “On-site Consultation Program’s Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) recognizes small employers who operate an exemplary safety and health management system.”
Those companies that receive SHARP recognition are exempted by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration from programmed inspections during the period of the company’s certification.
The company celebrated this achievement with a barbecue on Wednesday. Geoffrey Holodook, supervising safety and health consultant and SHARP program coordinator with the state Department of Labor, presented the company with a flag to recognize their achievement. He said one-third of one percent of the manufacturing industries are given thes award.
“It’s not the big things. It’s the little things,” said Holodook before presenting the flag. “It’s the pre-job inspections. It’s picking things up. So keep up the good work.”
Marty Callahan, human resources manager at Helmont, said the company has worked for four years to achieve this goal and that it took the participation of all its employees to make it happen.
“From the janitor up to the vice president of operations,” he said.
To become certified by SHARP, businesses must accomplish several things including correcting all hazards identified by a consultant and implement and maintain a safety and health management system.
“On behalf of the village, we appreciate everything you folks do,” said St. Johnsville Mayor Bernard Barnes during Wednesday’s event.
Callahan said the company manufactures textiles for automobiles and various industries. He said they employ about 70 people and have had their doors open for over 50 years.
