Stacy Collins carefully trimmed the hair along Flick’s back, one of the cows from Collins-Pride Holsteins in Cedarville.
She was prepping the cow for a show at the Herkimer County Fair on Friday.
“A lot of work goes into this ...You have to wash them, lead them, feed them a special mix,” said Collins, noting care for an animal in competition starts on the day they are born.
Collins, 18, said she has been competing in animal shows since she was five years old.
“I like the competition,” she said.
On Friday, one of the competitions was specifically for those older than 21 years of age called the Over-the-Hill Competition as part of the open dairy show, which is more about showmanship than the cow itself. One part of the competition included the contestant going over to another cow, that wasn’t their own, to see if they were able to properly handle it.
The Open Dairy Show on Friday had 16 classes scheduled for competition, plus championship classes.
There are several livestock shows that take place during the fair, including the youth dairy show, the meat goat show, the beef show, the sheep show and the dairy goat show.
There are also open livestock shows and the Farmyard Olympics.
Besides more livestock shows at the animal livestock arena, Saturday at the fair will include the youth horse show, the talent show at noon at the entertainment complex, the children’s rodeo at 4 p.m. and the four-wheel drive truck pull (modified and diesel) at 6:30 p.m., as well as two performances by the Fulton Chain Gang at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.
On Sunday, the last day of the fair, there will be a tractor pull at 10 a.m., the Idol finals at 2 p.m., the children’s rodeo at 4 p.m., the four-wheel drive truck pull (stock) at 7 p.m. and performances by Carmine Dio at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
