Preparations for this year’s Herkimer County Fair were under way at the fairgrounds on Monday.
“We’re in pretty good shape,” said Gerry Elthorp, director of the Herkimer County Fair.
Opening ceremonies were scheduled for Tuesday. The fair will run until Sunday, Aug. 19, and will bring back many familiar events for those who traditionally attend, as well as some new features.
Elthorp said a new exhibit that will be on display this year is called “Go Green,” which will showcase several environmentally-concisous ideas. Also, after approximately a 10-year-hiatus, the Star Circus will return with its “Great Bear Show,” which will include varied performances by bears.
Some of the traditional events that are continuing this year are the animal and livestock judging and the rides from Gillette Amusement Park Rides.
Eight-year-old Casey Elthorp, who sat on a fence next to his cow Black Betty on Monday, said he has wanted to show for the past three years and is excited about doing it for the first time.
Gerry Elthorp said some vendors were still arriving Monday because they had other events over the weekend. Several were putting together or putting up their stands and signs, including Al and Alaina Valeriano, of Frankfort, for their food stand Valeriano’s, and Herman VanOoijen and Pat Tomaino, for the Mohawk Valley Firebirds.
Tuesday’s events included a sports challenge, a small animal judging contest, the Herkimer County Fair pageants and fireworks. Other events scheduled throughout the week include musical performances by the Van Dells, Johnson and Company, Carl Acuff, Jr., the Fulton Chain Gang and Carmine Dio, which plays into this year’s theme of “A Little Bit of Country, A Little Bit of Rock-n-Roll.”
The demolition derby is scheduled for Thursday, a tractor pull is slated for Friday and truck pulls will take place on Saturday and Sunday because of their past popularity.
Gerry Elthorp said there is something for everyone at the fair. “There’s youth events ... and there’s things for senior citizens, including a scavenger hunt and bingo,” she said. “There’s also the Milky Way Adventure, a farm adventure that teaches kids and adults.”
Admission prices are $7 for those 12 years old and older, $3 for children ages 5 to 11 and children younger than five years of age are admitted free. Children Days are Aug. 15 and 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. whem children younger than 11 years of age will be admitted free.
