Nearly two dozen people gathered for an afternoon tea at Herkimer Home State Historic Site on Wednesday.
“We thought we’d do something a little different and have the patriotic plates ... It’s to celebrate the country’s independence, a few weeks after,” said Liz Palmer, who co-hosted the event with Jan Gagnon.
The teas were started five years ago by the Friends of the Herkimer Home, and serve as a fundraiser. Palmer said it took about two days for her and Gagnon to prepare all the food for the event and would take about one day after to clean-up.
The menu included iced tea, lemonade, a fresh fruit cup, hot herbal tea, cheddar bacon scones, honey scones, roasted chicken salad sandwiches, cream cheese with thin sliced Vidalia onion sandwiches and red, white and blue cake.
“It’s a pleasure for me [to do the teas]. I couldn’t see this going away. Everybody loves the teas,” said Palmer. “It’s a labor of love. We want [the Home] to stay viable for years to come and this is how the Friends do it.”
Palmer said though people had the option to dress casual for the patriotic-theme tea, many still chose to dress up for the occasion.
Maria Fiorentino attended Wednesday’s event with her seven-year-old niece Ivory Rosemyer.
“It’s outside ... and the food is tasty,” said Ivory on why she likes going to the teas.
“It’s nice to come out in the summertime,” added Fiorentino.
Jeannette Crester, who attended with her great-niece Sarah Palmer, said it was her first time attending one of the teas. “It’s something different,” she said.
