Lanterns were lighted Friday evening at Cangee’s in East Herkimer as part of a vigil in memory of the 20 children and six adults killed in the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.
Cold temperatures and gusty winds kept many of the lanterns from launching as planned, but one finally soared high into the night sky, continuing until all that could be seen was a pinprick of light in the darkness.
Candy Rowan, owner of Cangee’s, said her customers wanted to do something to memorialize the victims and Jeff Alford, of Little Falls, came up with the lanterns.
Alford said he had purchased the lanterns for his grandchildren, but decided to donate them to this effort. When he looked to see how many he had, there were 27 lanterns.
After the efforts to launch the lanterns, Carolyn Alford read the names of the victims.
“We did what we could do,” said Rowan.
