Some familiar landmarks in Eastern Park have been spruced up thanks to the efforts of the city’s Association for Community Improvement.
Association Chairman Edwin Vogt said brush had been cleared from around the city’s Civil War monument, which was originally placed by veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic, and a new plaque placed on its base in honor of the men from Little Falls who fought in that war.
The plaque includes a poem by Vogt, “The Sentry at Ward’s Square.”
The plaque also lists the units in which city residents served during the war.
“This dedication ceremony would not be a success without community support, the mayor’s (Robert Peters) guidance and the approval of the Board of Public Works,” said Vogt. “The donations from citizens, merchants and corporations made it possible to both restore the grounds and install an appropriate tablet in honor of the gallant veterans of the Civil War.”
He expressed the association’s thanks to all involved and especially Chapman-Moser Funeral Home for the installation of the tablet.
In addition, the park’s gazebo has been sanded down and stained.
Next year, the association hopes to work on the roof of the gazebo.
“This was all done at no cost to the city,” Vogt pointed out.
He said donations were solicited from local residents, sponsors, merchants and industries to raise the funds needed for the projects.
Work on the Civil War monument began in February with the restoration of the wrought iron fence that circles the memorial. The fence was drill brushed and painted by Vogt.
