A large crane in the parking lot of Bassett’s Herkimer Health Center last week called attention to the expansion project currently under way at the facility.
Renovation of 19,000 square feet of space adjoining the current health center began last fall, according to a news release from Bassett Healthcare, and the project will allow for an expansion of services to accommodate increased demand for outpatient medical services in the Mohawk Valley.
Construction is expected to be completed late this year and once it is, the vacant space, which was formerly occupied by Rite Aid Pharmacy, will be filled with adult primary care and a surgical subspecialties clinic. That will free up space in the existing health center to expand Convenient Care, cancer services, women’s health, pediatrics and other medical specialties. After the renovation, cancer services, for example, will go from five chemotherapy chairs to eight, according to the release. Convenient Care will add four or five examination rooms to the six it currently has.
Most of the work areas in the renovated space will be set up in “pods,” according to the release. Pods are complementary to the medical home model, which has at its center the patient and a health care team that includes a physician, an advanced practice clinician and a nurse. There will be three to five exam rooms in each pod.
The building is owned by Bassett’s real estate holding company.
