Herkimer, N.Y. —
Two county sheriffs and a deputy sheriff gathered at the Herkimer Thruway interchange Thursday morning.
But this gathering had nothing to do with prisoners or jails. They were waiting with loaded vehicles for a tractor-trailer to arrive from Canandaigua to take supplies to the New York City and Long Island area to assist victims of Hurricane Sandy.
The drive was coordinated by the New York State Sheriffs’ Association, according to Herkimer County Sheriff Chris Farber. He said the items collected included cleaning supplies, blankets, towels, gloves, tissues, paper towels, nonperishable foods and other items.
Also on hand waiting for the truck to arrive were Oswego County Sheriff Reuel Todd and Oneida County Deputy Sheriff Fred Lomanto.
The three said in addition to items collected at their own offices, boxes were placed in county office buildings to allow more people to contribute. Todd said individuals were invited to contribute and the unions also got involved in the project in his county.
When the tractor-trailer arrived, the items were loaded and the truck moved on toward its next stop in Albany before heading for the New York City area.
The drive was organized in cooperation with the Salvation Army and the supplies were being taken to the Salvation Army for distribution to those in need.
Farber said sheriffs across the state make up a brotherhood and stand ready to assist the public in any way they can.
The call for the Thanksgiving Week donation drive appeared on the association’s website, along with a list of specific items to be collected.
