Congressman Richard Hanna stopped by Ilion Junior-Senior High School on Monday to talk about the upcoming Academy Day at SUNYIT on Saturday, June 19, at 10 a.m.
Representatives from the United States Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Military Academy and U.S. Coast Guard Academy will be present on Academy Day for interested sophomores and juniors from throughout the 24 Congressional District to learn more about the nation’s service academies.
Hanna, R - Barneveld, said the academies are a great opportunity for students to further their education and cut down on the high cost of schooling.
A Representative of Hanna’s academy review committee, John F. Ahern said, “The price of top notch colleges can reach up $235,000 for four years of schooling. If a student is accepted into an academy their schooling is paid for by American taxpayer dollars.”
Although Hanna encouraged students to apply he did remind them applying to the academies is very competitive. “In order to qualify, students need to be the total package, they need to have good grades, need to be active in school sports and/or have been involved in a number of different school activities,” said Hanna.
Ahern added, “Students who apply are competing against students from 50 other states, and only about 1,000 students are accepted into the academies.”
Hanna said he hopes students will visit SUNY IT for Academy Day and realize it is an opportunity of a lifetime to further one’s education and future.
