West Canada Valley Central School presented its Music in our Schools concert and a student art show Thursday night as part of the third annual New York State Youth Art Month.
“It has been a tradition to enjoy music and the arts together through the program,” said art teacher Judy Golem.
Student choruses included the West Canadians, a select high school chorus, an elementary select chorus, the junior chorus and the senior chorus. All of the choruses joined in song together for the final number. Elementary select chorus director Sue Kubica mentioned the concert honored Music in Our Schools Month.
The art show featured works of art created by students from kindergarten to grade 12. Sculptures, studio art, paintings and drawings were all on display in the school’s library. Two sculptures of the human body made by the high school sculpture class welcomed students and families as they arrived for Thursday night’s concert and art show. The sculptures were created by casting the bodies of students into clear packaging tape.
A special exhibit displayed intricately designed clay bowls made by senior Ciera Sportello. One bowl was made as a tribute to her aunt who battled breast cancer. Her aunt’s name was written in clay around the bowl and life-like clay flowers were designed inside and outside the bowl.
“The student art show is a good way to showcase what’s happening in the arts,” said Golem.
The students’ artwork can also be seen at the Herkimer County art show at Basset Healthcare in Herkimer. According to Golem, it’s the school’s third year being featured in the show.
A chorus concert featuring third- and fourth-graders is scheduled for May 3 at 7 p.m. and a second concert featuring the junior and senior choruses and band will take place on May 15 at 7 p.m.
Both events will be accompanied by a student art exhibit.
