While waiting for the coaster car races to begin during the Silver Anniversary Little Falls Canal Celebration on Saturday, resident Alicia Carroll spoke about the many things the annual festival has to offer.
“We live right in town. It’s a great thing to do,” she said. “As the kids get older, we can do different things.”
Carroll said her daughter, Margaret, has done something different each year. One year she said they did the geology walk, and another year she said they did a canoe race.
Now that her daughter is nine-years-old, she was old enough to do the coaster car race that took place next to Burke Park on Jackson Street.
“We haven’t done the Lil’ Diamond yet. We’ll have to do that next year,” said Carroll.
Johanna Stock was also at the coaster car race with her step son, Antowon Walker. Stock said she participates in the Canal Celebration every year since her father, Roger Stock, is one of the organizers. She said the week-long event brings people together.
“Everybody comes home for this,” she said. “You get to see people you haven’t seen in a long time.”
Jennifer Bacher, of Little Falls, also brought her son, Joseph, to participate in the races said she likes being able to see friends during the event.
Different sections of the city had activities going on throughout the week, including Eastern Park, Burke Park, Canal Place, Moss Island and Rotary Park.
Events began on Aug. 5 at Little Falls High School for the Miles 4 Amyloidosis 5K Run/Walk, in memory of Paul C. Bryan. There was also a 5K breast cancer walk on Tuesday, and an official kick-off community picnic on Wednesday at Rotary Park. On Friday, the Silver Anniversary Grande Parade took place and included several fire engines, tractors and floats from local businesses.
Stephanie Emery, of St. Johnsville, was there with her daughter, Madison.
“She loves the fire trucks and the police cars,” she said of her daughter.
Events concluded on Sunday atHerkimer Home State Historic Site where there was a public procession and an 18th century military officer’s funeral and wreath-laying ceremony scheduled.
