Town of German Flatts, N.Y. —
The German Flatts Town Park was the site of the fifth annual Polka Fest on Friday evening as locals stopped by for plenty of food, polka music and dancing.
Tony’s Polka Band, of Amsterdam, provided polka lovers with entertainment throughout the night.
“The event is full of food, dancing, Polish culture and a lot of happy fun,” said Friends of the German Flatts Town Park member Maria Hunt, who has prepared food for the event the past three years. “Everything we have is homemade, including galumpkis, pierogies and sauerkraut. Desert options include strawberry shortcake and root beer floats.”
Hunt added, “After this year’s event ends, I’ll be gearing up to make the next year’s event, which is scheduled for Aug. 23, 2013, even bigger.”
Friends Phyllis Prentice, Carol Kinville and Helene Paschke decided to go out for night of polka and food. The three women said neither of them were Polish, but that did not stop them from enjoying their time at the Polka Fest.
“The food is very good and even though I don’t know what their singing about, I enjoy listening to the music,” said Prentice.
Ted Sosnoski, of Herkimer, enjoyed the food with his wife, Beverly, during the event. The two shared a Polish sampler which included a sampling of several homemade Polish delights.
Sosnoski, who is of Polish decent, said “the food was excellent.”
“The event is one of our best fundraisers for the German Flatts Town Park,” said town Supervisor Frank Spatto. “We earn our funding through grants, donations and fundraisers, and the Polka Fest is a top fundraiser that will benefit the town park.”
Currently, the town park is working on an expansion project which includes the re-setting of the old schoolhouse, and the addition of an extended parking lot and a community center.
Spatto said the foundation for the schoolhouse is complete and within the next few months he hopes to have the schoolhouse in place.
