A “morkie” sporting a “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” kerchief won top the title of 2012 Pet of the Year.
But who will it be for 2013?
The sixth annual Times Pet Calendar contest is under way. Photos of readers’ pets — be it dog, cat, bird, horse, etc. — at their cutest, most playful or most adorable can be submitted for one of the 12 spots on the 2013 pet calendar and with a chance to earn the title of the 2013 Pet of the Year.
“The turnout was tremendous for the 2012 calendar and we’re looking forward to area residents sending in their photos. We’re expecting a large turnout again,” said Telegram and Times Publisher Beth Brewer on Monday.
Hercules, a cross of a Maltese and a Yorkie terrier, won the 2012 title. He is owned by Leslie Zuccaro, of Little Falls, who said last December she and her husband, Henry, were encouraged to enter Hercules in the contest by friends and family.
“Hercules loves to go on walks and [go to] flea markets and craft shows in his very own doggy stroller,” wrote Zuccaro on the back of the photo she had submitted.
She also said he loves to go boating with her and Henry in the summertime.
Members of The Times staff will pick the 25 finalists. Voting will run until Nov. 30. Each vote costs a dime. Ballots can be found in the print edition of the paper along with photos of the 25 finalists.
“This all goes toward the Newspapers in Education program, where we place newspapers into area schools weekly during the school year,” said Brewer. “It provides a living textbook and a learning tool for students.”
Photos need to be submitted by Oct. 31 to The Times by mail at P.O. Box 551, Herkimer, NY 13350 or dropped off at the office at 111 Green St., Herkimer.
The photo must be a sharply contrasted photo that will reproduce well.
A self-addressed stamped envelope needs to be included if entrants want their photo returned. Include the pet’s name, the owner’s name, address and telephone number on the back of the photo along with a short description of the pet’s breed, etc.
