After enjoying a busy summer of recreational and social activities and programs, the residents of Folts Homes in Herkimer were ready to usher in autumn.
They did so by inviting the community to the Folts Homes campus on Saturday for Autumn Apple Dumpling Day, a relaxing afternoon full of live entertainment, harvest market shopping, agricultural exhibits and treats such as apple dumpling and pumpkin flan a la mode.
Sponsored by the Folts Foundation, support from Autumn Apple Dumpling Day and events like it augment the various recreational and social programs provided for residents’ enjoyment.
Saturday’s event also provided the opportunity for members of the Herkimer High School Class of 1963 to display black and white photographs of the village of Herkimer’s yesteryear, including photographs of older school buildings and former businesses along Main Street.
Pat Walczak Frazier, a Herkimer Now committee member and director of public relations for Folts Homes, said when contacted, the members of the Herkimer High School Class of 1963 enthusiastically sent in donations to cover the costs involved in printing and matting the photos.
Previously on display in the empty storefront window of the Munger building on North Main Street, Frazier said the photos will now be displayed in nursing homes for residents’ enjoyment.
“We are proud of what we were able to accomplish with this project and we are happy to be able to share it with the people who remember Main Street as it appears in the pictures,” said Frazier.
Herkimer Now is a community group that seeks to revitalize the Main Street corridor in Herkimer in an effort to attract residents and visitors to the business district.
