Fort Plain, N.Y. —
From simply writing out the names of their BFFs or favorite sports team, to drawings of mountains and the stars, artists of all varying kinds participated in the first-ever “Chalk of Fame” event on Saturday in the village of Fort Plain.
“Some of them are so good,” said Elaine Rider, of Ephratah, who said she stopped by Fort Plain just to see the event. “This is wonderful. I’ve heard people saying this is getting people together and it’s getting them outside.”
Tim Shepard, of Canajoharie, attended the event with his daughters, Jenna and Sydney.
“I thought it was a great idea,” said Shepard, who is neighbors with organizer Bob Buck. “An art event like this, though the community, it’s just fantastic.”
Shepard added, “And you can get your hands dirty.”
Buck, president of the Arts Factory, said he had thought about doing something like it for awhile.
“I couldn’t get the right people to take it,” he said.
Buck said then he met with Whitney Hubbard, director of the Fort Plain Free Library, and the idea became a reality. “It turned out as well as I hoped,” he said on Saturday, at Haslett Park. “We had a fantastic turnout.”
Kelsey Waffle, Donna Blanchard and Blanchard’s daughter, Carolynn Reinhardt, along with Carolynn’s father, Michael Reinhardt, worked together on their sidewalk chalk art.
“We just pieced it together,” said Waffle.
It took the group two to three hours to complete the artwork which included flowers, a star with a rainbow trailing after it and butterfly wings.
“We did it in all different spots and filled it in,” said Waffle.
Jenna Shepard drew S-shaped clouds floating over mountains for her artwork. “I go hiking a lot. I was inspired by the mountains that we see all the time when we go hiking,” she said.
Jenna also said she enjoyed the experience.
“I think it’s really fun,” she said. “I plan on doing this next time.”
