Mavrick Crews helped art teachers Tammy Roorda and Wendy Rockwell hang pieces of art by students in the Little Falls City School District on Monday in preparation for Tuesday’s show.
Crews, an eleventh grader, has two pieces that will be among the 500 works on display.
“It was fun trying to get all the colors to work the way they did,” said Crews, showing off a colored pencil drawing he did of a heron.
The piece was completed as an assignment in his art class.
Crews said he just recently developed an interest in art.
“I’m starting to get into it more than I used to,” he said.
The Little Falls City School District’s Festival of the Arts will be on view in the high school gymnasium. The art show will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. and will exhibit works from kindergartners to seniors. There will also be a performance of the bell choir and instrumental performances by Benton Hall Academy students, and the middle and high school band and choral groups will perform in the auditorium at 7 p.m. The events coincide with the school budget vote.
Roorda and Rockwell talked about the impact an art class can have on a student in times when art programs are on the chopping block for many school districts.
“It makes them a well-rounded student,” said Roorda. “Art is everything, from the clothes we wear to the car we drive. People don’t realize it.”
The art show includes all kinds of mediums, including painting, ceramics, drawing, photography and sculptures.
The three elementary, middle and high school art teachers select the works for the exhibit based on state standards and criteria.
“Not everybody has a piece in it,” said Roorda. “We really want kids to have worked for it.”
