Monday night’s snowstorm quickly made its way through the Mohawk Valley. From late afternoon into the evening three to four inches of snow accumulated.
By Tuesday morning the snowstorm weakened and headed southeast leaving the area.
According to National Weather Service Meteorologist Steve DiRienzo, Herkimer County could expect to see some light lake effect snow showers during Tuesday evening and overnight hours into Wednesday morning. “Just expect typical winter weather over the next couple days,” he said.
Although the Mohawk Valley could see more lake effect snow WUTR Meteorologist Jeff Matthews said, “it’s not something people should worry to much about.”
“Lake effect snow will continue to pass through Herkimer County throughout Tuesday night and taper off by Wednesday morning, but most of the area will only see about and inch or less of snow,” he said. “Travel should be fine, but could become a problem for those who head towards western New York due to heavier lake effect accumulation.”
On Tuesday morning, conditions were treacherous on Interstate 81 north of Syracuse. According to an AP report, two feet of lake effect snow made travel conditions poor in northern and southwestern New York, and resulted in a state Department of Transportation snowplow going off the highway.
A bigger problem currently presented is the cold temperatures and wind chill.
The National Weather Service issued a wind chill advisory for Herkimer County from 7 p.m. Tuesday until noon on Wednesday. “Over the next few nights expect bitter cold temperatures dipping down to negative five degrees below zero,” said Matthews.
The next few days should remain quiet with a possibility of light lake effect snow, but another storm system is expected to return to the area Friday evening, said Matthews.
