1. The NFL season kicks off Wednesday with one game, and the rest of the teams are set to play Sunday or Monday. Check out http://www.nfl.com/ or http://www.profootballweekly.com/ for the latest news, fantasy football tips, schedules and more.

2.  Opening in theaters this week are “The Words,” a PG-13 drama starring Bradley Cooper, Dennis Quaid, Olivia Wilde and Zoe Saldana; “The Cold Light of Day,” a  PG-13 thriller starring Henry Cavill, Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver; and “Bachelorette,” an R comedy starring Kirsten Dunst.

3. Trekkies rejoice! Saturday is the birthday of “Star Trek.” The show debuted on NBC on Sept. 8, 1966. Check around to see if any comics stores or other places around town are doing anything special, or organize your own party.

4. Sunday is National Grandparents Day, a day designed to celebrate the grandparents in your life. Check out the official website of the day, http://www.grandparents-day.com/, if you need ideas on how to honor your grandmother and grandfather.

5. Tuesday is the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, and some places are scheduling memorial events this weekend. Check the newspaper for details. Also check the TV listings, as channels will be broadcasting documentaries this weekend.
