Parents generally nurture and encourage skills to build self esteem, confidence and strong leadership qualities in their child. A strong spirit with learned family values can protect a child from following others who may display risky or dangerous behavior. Becoming a strong leader can provide opportunities for a child who knows what he wants. However, with a young child there is a fine line between leading and being bossy, or even a bully. When a young child tells others to do something which they will not do, and then says she will not play with them if they don’t play her way, she has stepped over to the side of being a bully. Many siblings play that way, using threats, which develops into a learned and acceptable behavior. When your child becomes comfortable with telling others what to do, especially adults, and then has a temper tantrum when they don’t comply, it’s time to step in.
