Last Sunday the Tramp & Trail Club ventured south to the Whaupaunaucau State Forest, located between Rte 12 and 29 in North Norwich. Here we wound our way through some of the 13 miles of available trails, meandering through a mix of forest and fields, accompanied by varied bird songs. It would be easy to get lost in all the twisting and intersecting trails unless you come accompanied by a map. Each trail is numbered and the map is easy to follow.
Jeffrey Pond, a 10 acre pond, is stocked with brown trout and is easily accessible. We took the long way to the pond and did the majority of our hiking before ever reaching the pond – but from the pond it was a short hike back to our cars.
Trail System
Whaupaunaucau means “Land of the Marten” in Native American, but martens no longer inhabit these woods. However, if you don’t mind fairly wet trails, these were beautiful woods to hike in.
