Solar Tip: Components of Solar Collectors

Print Comment

undefinedWhile the concept of solar panels on your roof to generate energy may seem simple, it's a good idea to know as much as you can in order to make informed decisions before calling a roofer or solar panel installer. In a Networx article by Yamini Mudaliar you can glean a good basic understanding. Mudaliar interviewed Dr. Jay Sampat, who distributes and installs solar thermal collectors with the help of roofing contractors in the Atlanta area.

One example Mudaliar gives is learning how a solar thermal system functions by knowing the key components. The parts described include evacuated tubes, copper heat pipes, copper head pipe, glass wool insulation, manifold casing, and a variety of mounting frames. "Solar collectors that consist of hollow evacuated solar tubes made from extremely strong borosilicate glass, which collects energy from the sun." The tube contains purified water or a freeze-resistant water mix. The tube absorbs the heat from the sun, and then the air inside the evacuated tube is pumped out, creating a vacuum trapping the heat inside. Now you have solar energy.
