While it appears that the US and Canada are moving more and more in the direction of "green" building, there can be a downside. Two problems that can occur due to new and expanding regulations relating to green building are delays in your project and possible lawsuits. An electrician's online magazine Electrical Contractor, based in Bethesda, commented on a study released in February 2012 by the British Columbia Construction Association regarding risks and liabilities relating to green building. "The study concludes that the conformity of the certification process complicates projects because of the additional coordination involved," states Rick Lazeman for the magazine. The study also suggests "that legal claims could be filed for a breach of contract if a project is perceived to have lost value or not sold because it failed to gain certification," said Lazeman. Other potential problems can relate to green materials failing or being installed improperly.
