There are now companies that specialize in environmentally friendly or "green" extermination. There are also specialized certifications for green exterminators. One company, M&M Pest control in NYC that specializes in green extermination explains some of the methods and certifications on their website. For example the company works to look at eliminating food sources and points of entry for pests and uses only EPA approved pesticides as a last resort.
One type of certification a green exterminator may have is the NESDCA (National Entomology Scent Detection Canine Association). Both the handler and canine must be certified annually to essentially sniff out bugs and other pests. The teams also must be trained for several months to be considered for the certification. The canines scent the source so that target areas can be treated.
