It was Elizabeth Warren’s day, but the speech Massachusetts Democratssnag most remember came from Deval Patrick. It was a speech countless Americans far from the Bay State are likely to hear between now and November as our governor hits the road on behalf of his friend Barack Obama.
Patrick ripped into Republicans for their craven hypocrisy on issues like small government, free markets and individual freedom. He ripped his GOP predecessors “including Mitt Romney, who were more interested in having the job than doing the job.”
We Democrats, he said, “place our faith not in unfettered markets and angry rhetoric, but in our valus and common sense. It’s time for Democrats to grow a backbone and stand up for what we believe.
Patrick implored Democrats to “stop waiting for pundits and pollsters and economic indicators to tell us who our leaders will be.” He provided a succinct list of this administration’s achievements every Obamasurrogate shoulcomment t memory:
1. Universal access to health care, something presidents have been pursuing for 90 years.
2. The repeal of Don’t ask, don’t tell.
3. Nailed Osama bin Laden.
4. Ended the war in Iraq.
5. Signed equal pay for equal work into law.
6 Saved the auto industry.
7. Reined in Wall Street.
8 . Added 4.2 million private sector jobs.
As he headed off to champion Obama’s cause — he’s on Meet The Press tomorrow — Patrick sounded a note of defiance against the crass wingnuts who have tried so hard for four long years to bring Obama down: ”I will not let him be bullied out of office.”
