While the Boilermaker registration transfer process is not complete that might ‘tweak’ some (it ends June 22nd) numbers, some interesting statistics have come out concerning this year’s field.
There are 48 states and DC that are represented; Hawaii and Iowa are currently not coming. Last year we had six from Iowa and three from Hawaii; for 2011 South Dakota was our lone holdout. Perhaps we’ll have runners get a racing bib via the transfer system or we get walkers from these two states. In a future blog I’ll reveal the top states.
There are four counties visiting: Canada (a traditional powerhouse with hundreds of runners), Spain, Grenada, and the Virgin Islands. This number will grow as the elite athlete field becomes clear.
For the 15k: 51% are men and 49% are women.
In the 5k: 61% are women and 39% are men.
Finally, in the Walk: 69% are women and 31% are men. This percentage could change dramatically as we allow signups up to Walk day.
If we look at age/ gender breakout our highest percentages are:
15k: 25-29 year old females at 9%
5k: 25-29 year old females at 7.6%
The Walk: 55-59 year old females at 10.6%
While I need to do some more research this might be the first year we see more females than males as participants.
