Beer of the Month: Dogfish Head’s Urkontinent

There are only a few breweries that I will splurge and spend $15 on a bottle, and Dogfish Head is one of them.

Say what you will about Dogfish Head’s 750 ml beers, even if you don’t particularly like them (more often than not, I do), but it’ll be like nothing you’ve had before.

And that’s the case with Urkontinent, the latest of Dogfish Head’s newest beer.

This is a Belgian-inspired ale, but brewed with a set of some pretty unusual ingredients – wattle seeds from Australia, toasted amaranth from South America, myrica gale from Europe, honey from the United States and rooibos tea from Africa.

The combination of the flavors these ingredients bring to the beer make this an unusual Belgian ale, but it also makes this a pleasurable drink.

At 8 percent ABV, this is more of a sipping beer, but there are some nice roasted flavors of coffee and chocolate, some cherry flavor and I even picked up something that was reminiscent of root beer. The booze is well-hidden, and it is rather easy to drink.

That’s the key for a big beer with a lot of flavors going on – making it easy to drink. It’s easy to throw a bunch of strange things into a beer, but making all of those strange ingredients work is harder, and Dogfish Head succeeded with Urkontinent. It’s worth seeking out.
