  • HERKIMER Joseph A. Agati, 89, of Herkimer, passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2014, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, with his loving family by his side.
    He was born Dec. 18, 1924, in New York City, the son of the late Giacomo and Carmella (Grasso) Agati. Joe graduated from the Barbizon School of Cosmetology in New York City.
    Joe was first married to Lucy Tucci for 35 years until her passing in 1977. He was later married to Joan Schuyler on April 15, 1978, at St. Mary's Church in Little Falls.
    Mr. Agati was a World War II Army veteran. Joe was last employed as a machinist at the former Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company in Utica. He was a member of the Church of Saints Anthony & Joseph in Herkimer.
    As patriarch of his family, Joe was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who took great pride in his children and grandchildren. Family meant everything to him. A talented artist, Joe enjoyed many hours oil painting, listening to music, watching old movies and praying the rosary with his wife every evening.
    Survivors include his loving wife of 37 years, Joan; a son, Giacomo Agati and wife, Margaret, of Litchfield, New Hampshire; three daughters, Mary Jo Dussault and husband, David, of Livonia, JoAnn Salamone and husband, James, of Little Falls, and Theresa Petelin and husband, Louis, of Livonia; two brothers, Frank Agati and wife, Eleanor, of Pennsylvania, and Giacomo Agati and wife, Mary Ann, of North Carolina; 12 grandchildren, Benjamin Agati and wife, Jennifer, Michael Dussault and wife, Kris, Shawn Dussault and wife, Jennifer, Matthew Dussault and wife, Melissa, Samuel Salamone and wife, Leslie, Joseph Salamone and wife, Renee, Daniel Salamone and wife, Allison, Maria Salamone, Nicholas Salamone, Nathaniel Petelin and wife, Nicole, Mark Petelin, and Lucy Aboudara and husband, Matthew; 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
    He was predeceased by a brother, Salvatore Agati, and a sister, Sarah Massa.
    The family will be receiving relatives and friends at the Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, 329 S. Washington St., Herkimer, 866-1500, beginning at 8:30 a.m. with prayer service beginning at 9 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. by Rev, Terrence Healy at Saints Anthony and Joseph Church, 228 S. Main St. in Herkimer. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, town of Herkimer.
