  • HERKIMER National Grid has issued a community grant to the Herkimer County Soil and Water Conservation District.
The National Grid Corporate Giving Program is based on three elements education, environment and sustainability and community impact. The community giving committee felt the Herkimer County Envirothon touched on all three elements and as a result, the SWCD was awarded a $1,000 grant to help with the cost of hosting the 2014 Herkimer County Envirothon.
The Herkimer County Envirothon will take place on Wednesday, May 7, at Wehrum Stadium with the assistance of Herkimer College. As a nonprofit organization, the Herkimer County SWCD could not provide educational events for the community without the financial support of local businesses. The funds will be used to pay for the cost of producing Envirothon shirts for 50 area high school students and their team advisors.
Approximately 30 volunteers and professional staff will also receive a 2014 Herkimer County Envirothon shirt.
High school students from West Canada Valley, Central Valley Academy, Poland and Frankfort-Schuyler will participate in the outdoor environmental competition. Lunch and awards will be provided with the winning team going on to represent Herkimer County at the New York State Envirothon May 21 and 22 at SUNY Morrisville College.
