  • United Way announces new board member, valley location

  • UTICA — United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica Area announced it is growing as an organization with new board members, staff and interns, as well as summer hours in Herkimer.
    New board member Stephen Surace is vice president and chief financial officer of Adjusters International and president of Mosaic Accounting. He has experience in financial aspects of disaster recovery consulting, specializing in property damage insurance claims, payroll limitation claims, utilities services, accounts receivable and brands and labels coverage.
    Sue Cornelius became finance manager in November 2013. Cornelius has worked in accounting for 15 years, about 10 of which have been in nonprofit work.
    Community investment manager Rachel Taylor is a native of Rome and holds a bachelor’s degree in government and politics from St. John’s University. Recently, Taylor completed a two year service as an environment extension agent with the Peace Corps in Burkina Faso, West Africa. Before Peace Corps, Taylor was an AmeriCorps volunteer with the American Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley.
    Jordan Heath became the marketing and community engagement coordinator in January. A Herkimer native, she moved back to the area after studying peace studies and public relations at Manhattan College. While in New York City she worked as an AmeriCorps volunteer for the American Red Cross of Greater New York and as an assistant store manager for Tesla Motors.
    Mara Meyers is the community engagement intern for spring and summer 2014. Meyers, originally from Syracuse, is a senior at Utica College studying public relations.
    Quincy Mack is the marketing, web and social media intern for spring 2014. Mack, a junior communications major at Utica College, is originally from Glens Falls.
    Chelsey Lawson, a junior studying sociology at SUNYIT, and Chris Wallace, a freshman studying economics at Hamilton College, are community investment interns for 2014.
    United Way is celebrating the 25th employment anniversary of Sandy Allbright, campaign coordinator.
    United Way will open their doors in Herkimer at least one day a week this summer in hopes to have a more consistent presence in the valley.
