LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. — Mitchell Baumeister pitched five hitless innings as Little Falls’ opening day starter and came back to get the last two outs to preserve the Mounties’ 8-5 win over the Cooperstown Hawkeyes.
Cooperstown (0-1, 0-1 CSC-II) had scored three runs and loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning when Baumeister returned to the mound and got the final two outs with his 11th and 12 strikeouts of the game. Baumeister had walked three batters and hit one and he allowed a pair of runs in the second inning.
Little Falls (1-0, 1-0 CSC-II) jumped ahead with five runs in the first inning and knocked Cooperstown’s starting pitcher out of the game. After the Hawkeyes got their first two runs, the Mounties came back with a run inn the bottom of the second and scored two more in the fifth for an 8-2 lead. The game was stopped in the middle of the sixth inning in a cold rain.
Baumeister, Jason Gallt and Sean Ward each drove in two runs for Little Falls and Theo Wind scored two runs. Wind and Ward each had two of the team’s nine hits.
The Mounties are scheduled to play Wednesday at Frankfort-Schuyler.
