  • FLY CREEK — Fly Creek Cider Mill is preparing for its 158th season.
When the mill opens on Thursday, April 10, visitors will be able to enjoy daily tastings of more than 40 specialty foods including barbeque sauces, marinades, salad dressings, syrups, salsas, dip mixes, apple wines and hard ciders.
New this year is the completed restoration of the water turbine that powers the mill. This was the third and most extensive restoration of the turbine works since the Michaels family purchased the mill in 1962. Sourcing the project locally, the mill contracted with Una-Lam of Sidney to replace the 12-foot tall wooden water silo. Repair of the Lesner turbine was performed by Cardish Machine Works of Watervliet. Cardish re-fabricated the blade assembly and fitted a new drive shaft that powers a series of flat belts that power the press. During the removal the mill team seized the opportunity to repair the tank’s foundation base and retaining wall. A new epoxy liner was installed in the pipe that brings water from the millpond to the water-tank in which the turbine is located.
“This restoration project was to-date the largest for our mill,” said Bill Michaels, co-owner of the mill, in a news release. “Personally it is very rewarding to have the opportunity to maintain and preserve our historic site for generations to witness cider being made the old-fashioned way.
The mill will start pressing fresh cider in the fall, but visitors to the opening will be able to taste cider that was pressed in November and frozen for sale in spring and summer.
Returning on April 26 for a second year is the CiderRun which has been expanded to include a 10K as well as the 5K run and 3K walk. This year’s CiderRun will benefit the Otsego and Delaware County Big Buddy mentoring program. For registration and more race information, visit www.delawareopportunities.org.
