  • SCHOLASTIC SOFTBALL: Poland goes 1-1 at Mudville

  • HERKIMER, N.Y. — The Poland Tornadoes won once and lost once Thursday as the 13th annual NYSSCOGS Softball Festival got under way at Mudville with the Kristen Haver Memorial Tournament.
    The Tornadoes were tied midway through their first game but were eventually beaten 6-5 by Vernon-Verona-Sherrill. They came back with a 6-1 win over Canastota in their second game.
    Hamilton was the tournament’s other varsity participant.
    Vernon-Verona-Sherrill broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the third inning then scored three more in the fourth, two on a double by Addy Szczerba who had scored the go-ahead run.
    Kara Blumenstock, who had a double among seven hits vfor Poland in the first game, hit two more doubles in the second and pitched a four-hitter for the win. The Tornadoes scored three runs in the top of the first inning and two more in the second while the Raiders managed a single run in the first against Morrison. Five of Poland’s nine hits were doubles.
    Hamilton’s Becca Rogers threw no-hitters in the tournament’s other two games. The Emerald Knights defeated Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 5-0 with just five hits of their own and beat Canastota 15-2.
