  • NEWPORT, N.Y. — The Poland Tornadoes’ 10-game winning streak reached its conclusion Saturday with a 72-51 loss to Kuyahoora Valley neighbor West Canada Valley.
West Canada Valley’s Indians (10-2) spread their scoring around — four players reached double figures but none had more than 12 points — and maintained a working lead throughout the game.
“Early in the year we were doing that, getting three or four guys in double figures,” West Canada Valley coach D.J. Shepardson said. “Then we had a couple of games where we had to come from behind and we had to get back to sharing the ball. The last few games we’ve been doing that again.”
Jordan Yaworski and Ryan Grogan shared the lead with 12 points Saturday — each had four assists and Grogan scored his points on a season-high four three-pointers — and Bobby Davenport and Alex Williams each scored 11. Williams had 11 rebounds for a double-double and Davenport contributed five rebounds, three blocked shots and three assists.
West Canada Valley took control of the game in the second game, outscoring Poland (10-2) 19-5 to open a 15-point halftime lead. Poland made a little run at the start of the third quarter, cutting the lead down to eight points, but trailed by 13 at the end of the period. Yaworski and Grogan started the fourth quarter with back-to-back three point shots from the top of the key and stretched the margin to 19.
“This was a good win for us against a good team,” Shepardson said. “They have a lot of players who are athletic and they had 10 wins in a row. After losing a couple (games), we needed to put some wins together and this was a good test for us.
“This was probably our most complete effort.”
Josh Sudakow scored seven points, Mike Sternberg had six, and each grabbed six rebounds for the Indians.
Mark Hennings had 18 points and nine rebounds for the Tornadoes. Dustin DuBrule added 12 points and three steals, Cameron Tabor had 10 points and four steals, and Ross Agen had nine points and nine rebounds.
Poland takes on Owen D. Young Tuesday at home. West Canada Valley’s next game is home Tuesday against Cooperstown.
