HERKIMER, N.Y. — The Herkimer Magicians have the inside track to the Center State League’s Division III title after beating Little Falls 57-27 in Thursday’s meet.
Both teams had won their first two duals within the six-team league and each has two remaining. Both teams have yet to meet Poland in league competition — Little Falls defeated the Tornadoes 53-27 at the Dominick DeSiato Duals in November — while Herkimer also has Mt. Markham and Little Falls, 9-0 overall in duals before Thursday, has Cooperstown.
Four consecutive pins at 170, 182, 195 and 220 pounds gave Herkimer a 27-9 lead in Thursday’s team scoring. A pin and a forfeit got Little Falls back to within six points before Herkimer won five of the final six bouts, all by pin.
Tyler Douglas gave Little Falls a strong start at 145 pounds. Trailing 6-2, he pinned James Petucci in the third period to give Little Falls the first six team points.
Jacob Wheet earned Herkimer’s first points with a 9-3 decision against Sam Casler at 152.
The 160-pound bout was scoreless through two periods before Mountie Sean Rood made a quick escape at the start of the third. Rood took Alex Shepardson down with 24 seconds left in the match and scored a near fall for a 6-0 lead before Shepardson reversed him. Rood held on to win 6-2.
Ethan Evans started the string of Herkimer pins at 170 pounds He led Cole Fredericks 7-6 after two periods and took Fredericks down again in the opening 30 seconds of the final period before pinning him at 4:57.
Andrew Grube, Dan Appley and Steven Napolitano followed with first-period pins against Caleb Ambroze, Zach Kane and Matt Jodway, respectively.
Dakotah Redner earned Little Falls six points with his second-period pin of Cosimo Tangorra at 285 pounds before the card shifted around to the lightweights and Herkimer surrendered the lone forfeit of the evening.
Herkimer’s T.J. Philpotts pinned Neiko Scarano at 4:49 of a 106-pound match that he led 1-0 on a second-period escape. He started the third period on top and forced Scarano to the mat before recording the fall.
Steven Philpotts built a 10-0 lead in his 113-pound bout before pinning Mountie James Scanlon in the third period.
Andrew Messina earned the final points for Little Falls by pinning Kyler Ford in the first period at 120 pounds.
Ryan Zawtocki, Austin Fuller and Collin Treen closed out the dual by pinning Mounties Devin Dawley, Dan Morgan and John Allman, respectively. Zawtocki’s third-period pin of Dawley clinched the win for the Magicians.
