  • NEWPORT, N.Y. — The West Canada Valley Indians held off a late Waterville rally and won 37-36 at home Saturday afternoon.
Waterville (6-5) scored only eight points before halftime and trailed throughout the second half. The visiting Indians, however, converted three late steals into layups and pulled within one point in the final minute of the game. Hannah Gray, who scored a game-high 19 points, had two of the steals and layups for Waterville and teammate Alex Decker added the third with about eight seconds on the clock.
Waterville quickly fouled Carissa Tasovac and sent the West Canada Valley junior to the line with 1.3 seconds on the clock. Tasovac missed the first shot of a one-and-one but time expired before Waterville could get a timeout called after gaining control of the rebound.
Tasovac had a basket and a pair of free throws — her only points of the game — in the middle of the fourth quarter and gave West Canada Valley (3-6) a 37-30 lead. Tasovac led the Indians with 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals.
After trailing 5-3 at the end of the first quarter, Waterville briefly picked up its offensive pace and led 8-7 1:31 into the second. The visitors would not score again before halftime as West Canada Valley made a 10-0 run to go up 17-8. With starters Tasovac, Hayley Yager and Morgan Lynch on the bench in foul trouble, the Indians got back-to-back baskets from Hannah Leshinski and strong play from a group that included Cora Maxwell who was playing her first game of the season after recovering from an injury.
Leshinski was one of four players tied for the West Canada Valley lead with six points in the win. Lynch had six points and nine rebounds, Leshinski had six and five, Kristen Sportello had six points and three steals, and Yager hit a pair of three-point shots for her six points. Maxwell contributed five points in her debut.
Decker scored 14 points for Waterville. Kassidy Karram had the other three.
West Canada Valley plays at home again Tuesday against Central Valley Academy.
