  • FORT PLAIN — As the Fort Plain Central School District begins constructing its budget for the 2014 - 2015 school year, the board of education received recommendations from administrators during their regular meeting on Jan. 8 to add three new staff members for the 2014 - 2015 school year.
The positions would allow students to take more electives that were cut due to position reductions.
The first recommendation was for a new of computer education, business education and technology education teacher which would allow the school to provide more electives for the students with disabilities, as well as regular education students, and provide more computer skills instruction for elementary students.
Administrators also requested a special education teacher.
“The elementary school needs to increase AIS and RTI services at all grade levels — a special education position would provide a full continuum of services for all and could provide full AIS and RTI support,” Superintendent Douglas Burton wrote in a memo to the board.
He said the addition of the teacher would allow teachers assistants to focus on social studies and science remediation, particularly in grades 4 to 6.
The final request was for a social studies teacher in the high school. The memo stated the new position would allow more electives for regular education students, while also helping with the career development and occupational studies certificate requirements for students with disabilities.
