  • WRESTLING: Thunder pins loss on Holland Patent

  • ILION, N.Y. — The Central Valley Academy Thunder kept its record perfect in dual meets with Tuesday’s 57-26 victory over the Holland Patent Golden Knights.
    Aided by forfeits at 99, 106 and 285 pounds, Central Valley Academy led 36-0 before Holland Patent earned its first points with Hunter Richard pin at 126. All but three of the 12 contested bouts ended with pins; two of the three decisions were of the major variety.
    Brothers Landry, Tanner and Laken Cook all pinned their opponents in the first period for Central Valley Academy, as did Gavin Goldsmith and Tim Rathbun. David Bardo had a second-period pin and Zakk Zuranski won a 4-1 decision at 182 pounds.
    Golden Knight Alex Herringshaw scored a major decision against John Mazza in a meeting between unbeaten wrestlers at 145 pounds. Holland Patent’s other winners were Austin Benoit, Marc Grogan and Josh Knamm.

    170 POUNDS — Marc Grogan (Holland Patent) defeated Nate Case (Central Valley Academy) by major decision, 16-4.
    182 POUNDS — Zakk Zuranski (Central Valley Academy) decisioned Matt Williams (Holland Patent), 4-1.
    195 POUNDS — Josh Knamm (Holland Patent) pinned Jesse Hendrick (Central Valley Academy), 3:09.
    Mustangs sweep

    WEST WINFIELD — The Mt. Markham Mustangs won three straight games at home Monday and defeated the Little Falls Mounties for the second time this season. The Mustangs, also 3-0 winners in Little Falls Dec. 2, won the rematch 25-3, 25-13, 25-13.
    Hannah Barrett had five aces, 11 assists, a kill and three digs for Mt. Markham (6-2); Kaleigh Bryce had five kills, four aces, five assists and one dig; Claire Ladlee had eight kills and an ace; Bridget Wilcox served five aces, three kills and seven digs; Brianna Wilcox had three aces, a kill and two digs; Megan Wool had seven digs, an ace and a kill; Courtney Thompson had three kills; Carryn Williams had two kills and one dig; and Olivia Thomson had three digs and one kill.
    Page 2 of 2 - Lauren Shepardson had two assists, one ace and one kill for Little Falls (0-8); Carolyn Alford had three digs and one ace; Kali Yerina and Brooke Walrath each had two kills; Samantha Ackerman had an ace and a block; Tara Van Alstine had four digs; and Kourtney Moser had two digs.
    Mt. Markham was a 2-1 winner in junior varsity play, taking the match by scores of 25-18, 22-25 and 25-17. Taylor Giaquinto had three kills, a block, two aces and two digs for Little Falls; Casey Baumeister had five assists, two kills, and an ace; Shelby Muller had two kills and three digs; Meghan Burleigh had two digs; Molly Bucenec served an ace with three digs; and Rebecca Swart had one kill.
    The Mustangs play at home against Cooperstown Wednesday. Little Falls plays at Westmoreland Wednesday.
