  • HERKIMER — Aubuchon Hardware closed its doors on Jan. 2.
A sign posted on the front door of the store at 105 N. Caroline St. in Herkimer read, “Store closed. Thank you for your business over the past 10 years.”
The sign directed those with questions about large animal and pet food to contact their Richfield Springs location at 858-2411.
“We lost our lease,” said Daniel Aubuchon, chief operating officer of the company, during a telephone interview Tuesday. He said there are currently no plans to open another store in Herkimer.
Aubuchon also closed its Ogdensburg recently, reportedly due to there being “no sales growth” there.
Aubuchon said six employees worked at the store that sold tools and supplies for plumbing and electrical work, lawn and garden equipment, home improvement items, outdoor living items and pet supplies.
Aubuchon Hardware was founded by William E. Aubuchon in 1908, according to the company’s website. It states Aubuchon Hardware is “the oldest family owned and managed chain of hardware stores in America. We operate over 125 neighborhood hardware stores throughout New England and upstate New York, in addition to www.HardwareStore.com.”
