  • GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Magicians go 7-1 to win tournament

  • EAST HERKIMER, N.Y. — The Herkimer Magicians won all but one game Saturday and finished first among five teams at the third annual Herkimer Winter Tournament.
    The Magicians won seven of eight games in round robin play against Waterville, Frankfort-Schuyler, Westmoreland and Owen D. Young. Waterville finished second with a 6-2 record and was followed by Frankfort-Schuyler (4-4), Westmoreland (2-6) and Owen D. Young (1-7).
    Herkimer senior Caitlyn Roorda was selected as the tournament’s most valuable player. Teammate Krista Green was a named to the all-star team with Owen D. Young’s Sarah Manning, Frankfort-Schuyler’s Jamie Juliano, Waterville’s Molly Suba and Westmoreland’s Alyson Brockway.
    Herkimer’s next match is Wednesday at Canastota. Frankfort-Schuyler travels to Holland Patent Thursday. Owen D. Young played Monday against Cooperstown.

    LITTLE FALLS 0
    LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. — The Cooperstown Hawkeyes won an extended third game Saturday to complete a sweep of the Little Falls Mounties.
    The Hawkeyes and Mounties played 58 points in the third game before Cooperstown closed out its 25-13, 25-14, 30-28 victory.
    Katie Franck served seven aces with nine assists for Cooperstown (7-1, 3-1 CSC-II); Kristin Ratliff had four kills, three aces and three assists; Carson Haney had three kills and two aces; and Jennifer Snyder served three aces and put down one kill.
    Winter Polnak notched seven kills for Little Falls (0-7, 0-3 CSC-II); Lauren Shepardson had seven assists; Tara Van Alstine had five digs; Samantha Ackerman had three assists; Samantha Dewan had two kills; Kourtney Moser had one ace and one kill; Lindsey Tolman had one kill and a pair of digs; Christina Deschene served one ace; and Brooke Walrath had one kill.
    Cooperstown also swept the junior varsity match, winning in two games by scores of 25-18 and 15-17. Taylor Giaquinto had three kills and two digs for Little Falls; Casey Baumeister had two aces and four assists; Molly Bucenec had two aces and one kill; Shelby Muller had three digs, an ace and an assist; Rebecca Swart had one kill; and Meghan Burleigh served one ace.
    Little Falls has a match Monday at Mt. Markham.
