  • DOLGEVILLE, N.Y. — Generals Brown’s Lions and South Jefferson’s Spartans went unbeaten within their pools and needed a tie-breaker Saturday to decide a champion at the end of two days of competition at Dolgeville’s annual Mountain Duals.
The Lions and Spartans wrestled to a 39-all tie in the placement round with the win going to General Brown on criteria; the Lions won one more match than the Spartans during their dual.
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake of Section II defeated Adirondack 45-31 in the third-place dual; both teams had been unbeaten before losing to General Brown and South Jefferson, respectively, in the final round of competition within their pools.
Canastota and Dolgeville, the two Center State Conference schools competing along with Adirondack, placed eighth and ninth, respectively, among 16 teams. Canastota was beaten by Hoosick Falls in its placement dual while Dolgeville defeated Amsterdam on criteria.
Jonathan Handy, competing at 106 pounds for Dolgeville, won a 7-2 decision against Jorge Rivera in the final match of the tournament to pull the Blue Devils even with the Rams at 36 on the scoreboard. Three consecutive Dolgeville forfeits had given Amsterdam a 26-33 lead before Handy and Rivera took the mat. Dolgeville won at eight of the 11 contested weights.
The win over Amsterdam ended a rough day for Dolgeville which had been beaten by South Jefferson, Peru and Hoosick Falls. The Blue Devils went 2-2 Friday, beating Averill Park and Au Sable Valley while losing against Baldwinsville and Adirondack.
Richard Lyon, Dolgeville’s 160-pounder, was the lone Blue Devil to finish the tournament with a perfect 8-0 record. He contributed a first-period pin to Dolgeville’s win against Amsterdam.
Dolgeville travels north Friday to compete in the Peru Invitational.
