  • SCHOLASTIC BASKETBALL: Poland boys, girls win tourney titles in Boonville

  • BOONVILLE, N.Y. — Both Poland varsity squads brought championship trophies home from Boonville after the Tornadoes swept the Adirondack Wildcats in the finals of the Adirondack Holiday Hoop Tournament.
    The Poland boys were 81-58 winners in Friday’s finale following a 45-37 win for their counterparts in the girls’ title game.
    Tournament most valuable player Mark Hennings scored 24 points in the boys’ victory and finished the tournament with 57 points over two days. The Tornadoes (7-1) led 38-31 at halftime and outscored the Wildcats (4-4) 25-7 in the third quarter. Tournament all-star Ross Agen added 19 points for Poland while Andrew Taverne had 13.
    Tournament all-stars Elliot Hernanadez and Ryan Dellerba led Adirondack with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
    Other all-star picks included Ryan Griffith from Sauquoit Valley, winner of the consolation game, and Brandon Lewandowski from Dolgeville.
    The Poland girls outscored Adirondack 15-5 in the second quarter and took a two-point halftime lead. Kara Morrison led the Tornadoes (8-1) with 12 points while Paige Sullivan scored 10. Lexi Charbonneau hit four three-pointers and scored 15 points to lead the Wildcats (3-3); Abby Philbrick added 13 points.
