  • UTICA — Mohawk Valley Community College inducted several new members into its Lambda Beta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.
This year's event marked the 53th anniversary for the Lambda Beta chapter at MVCC, which was started in 1960 with the induction of 24 students when the college was known as the Mohawk Valley Technical Institute.
The 2013 fall inductees include Willard Crawn IV, of Sauquoit, majoring in nursing; Sonia Garcia, of Utica, majoring in individual studies-health; Joseph Massoud, of Utica, majoring in criminal justice; Kelsey McCann, of Ilion, majoring in general studies; and Jessica Sweeney-Howard, of West Winfield, majoring in human services.
Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society that serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students while providing opportunities for individual growth and development through academic, leadership and service programming. It is the largest honor society in American higher education, having been established in 1918 by two Missouri two-year college presidents.
