CAMDEN, N.Y. — The Central Valley Academy Thunder overtook Camden on the second day of competition Saturday and won the Center States League Tournament championship.
Camden started the day with 10 wrestlers in the semifinals. Three of Central Valley Academy’s six semifinalists — Laken Cook, John Mazza and Tim Rathbun — won individual titles while all four of Camden’s finalists were beaten in their title bouts.
The Thunder amassed 225 1/2 points, 15 more than Camden, to finish at the top of the 18-team field. Whitesboro, Dolgeville and Adirondack rounded out the top five with defending champion Holland Patent placing ninth, Mt. Markham 13th, Little Falls tied with Oneida for 14th, Herkimer 16th, Cooperstown 17th and Poland 18th.
Camden led Central Valley Academy 106 1/2-91 after the first day of competition Friday. Dolgeville moved up from sixth place on Day 1 to finish fourth.
Central Valley Academy placed five wrestlers in the finals. Cook scored a major decision against New Hartford’s Sean McKenna in the 138-pound title bout, Mazza pinned Camden’s Garrett Mitchell at 145, and Rathbun won a 7-5 decision against Richard Lyon of Dolgeville at 160. C.J. Walz and Hunter Shaut were beaten in the finals at 99 and 106 pounds, respectively, by New Hartford’s Ian and Kelan McKenna, Sean’s younger brothers.
Six other wrestlers placed for the Thunder. Zakk Zuranski and Landry Cook were third at 182 and 195 pounds, respectively; Brandon Yager was fourth at 285; David Bardo was fifth at 120; and Tanner Cook and Jesse Hendrick were sixth at 113 and 220.
Lyon was one of four Dolgeville finalists. Ben Nastovski finished second at 152 pounds with a loss in the finals against Holland Patent’s Alex Herringshaw. Triston Engle and Kasey Foster won titles at 170 and 182 pounds; Engle pinned Jack Buell of Sherburne-Earlville in his final bout and Foster scored a major decision against Brett Finch of Camden.
Engle was voted most outstanding wrestler for the upper weights while 120-pound champion Dandre Norman of Rome Free Academy was honored for the lower weights.
Noah Handy finished fourth at 120 pounds for Dolgeville while Ian Nagle was fifth at 145.
Other individual champions included Adirondack’s Derek Spann (113 pounds), Holland Patent’s Hunter Richard (126), New Hartford’s Dempsey King (132), Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Lane Frost (195), Whitesboro’s Tyler Hudson (220) and Canastota’s Jacob Morris (285).
Little Falls had two wrestlers with top-six finishes: Neiko Scarano and Sean Rood were fifth at 106 and 152 pounds, respectively. Other area wrestlers who placed included Herkimer’s T.J. Philpotts (third, 106 pounds), Poland’s Albert Amacher (fourth, 126) and Mt. Markham’s Tanner Christian (third, 132).
Spann, Richard, Engle and Laken Cook were repeat champions in the second year under the current league format. Coo, a senior, also won two Center State Conference titles prior to the Tri-Valley League merger. Mazza, Morris and Engle also won tournament titles in the CSC. Current Central Valley Academy coach Bob Bush led Ilion to a team title at the 2009-10 CSC tournament.
