  • HERKIMER — The Herkimer ARC will host Autism Movement Therapy classes on Saturdays for children ages 4 to 12 Jan. 4, 2014, to Feb. 8, 2014, at the agency’s exercise and dance studio at the Gail W. Brown Center, 411 Folts St., Herkimer.
The classes will be led by Kaylan Comes, who is a certified Autism Movement Therapy instructor. Classes for children ages 4 to 8 will meet from 10 to 11 a.m. and classes for children ages 9 to 12 will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost per six-class session is $60, with a maximum of 10 people per class. Participants from Herkimer and neighboring counties are welcome to attend.
While the therapy was designed with autism in mind, it is used for individuals with Down syndrome, Attention Deficit Disorder and intellectuals disabilities. AMT classes provide children with an opportunity to enjoy music, movement and dancing in a setting that allows them to socialize with other children. The AMT approach utilizes music, rhythm and motion to address gross motor, socialization, communication and focus skills.
