  • ILION — Heads-R-Turning Salon & Spa owner Kelley Holmes-Morton recently became certified in advanced deep tissue massage therapy from Massage Therapist and Rolfer Art Riggs.
Riggs is a certified advanced rolfer and massage therapist who has been teaching bodywork for over 18 years. A lifetime of hard physical activity and high-level athletic pursuits, including ultra-marathons led him to bodywork, first as a grateful recipient, and later as a student, according to a news release. He has conducted numerous workshops for health spas, medical professionals, massage schools, massage therapists and physical therapists. His certifications include extensive training abroad in Munich and Germany and he has worked with several Olympic athletes, professional football and basketball players, and professional dancers and musicians to treat injuries and to improve performance.
Deep tissue massage helps realign deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It’s especially helpful for stiff necks, low back tightness and sore shoulders, and those who suffer from chronic pain and limited mobility, and recovery from injuries, repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, postural problems, osteoarthritis pain, fibromyalgia, muscle tension or spasm, according to the release. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement, according to the release.
According to a previously published Consumer Reports magazine, 34,000 people ranked deep tissue massage more effective in relieving osteoarthritis pain than physical therapy, exercise, prescription medications, chiropractic, acupuncture, diet, glucosamine and over-the-counter drugs.
Heads-R-Turning Salon & Spa is located at 6 W. Clark St. in Ilion.
