  • HERKIMER, N.Y. — The West Canada Valley Indians started fast Tuesday and kept the pressure on for three quarters of their 80-62 win over the Herkimer Magicians.
The Indians raced out to a 22-7 lead in the Center State Conference Division II opener for both squads. They led by 19 points at halftime and as many as 33 late in the third quarter.
“That’s the first time we’ve shot the ball really well,” West Canada Valley coach D.J. Shepardson said. “We’ve been talking about our capability shooting the ball and it just hadn’t happened.”
Senior Jordan Yaworski and junior Bobby Davenport combined to hit 11 of the Indians’ season-high 12 three-pointers. Davenport had six threes and led the team with 25 points. Yaworski had five threes and scored 19 points.
Yaworski hit the first two West Canada Valley three-pointers and scored eight points during a first quarter that ended with the Indians leading 25-10.
Magician Malik Briggs kept the Indians from running away with the game in the second quarter but the West Canada Valley attack kept coming. Davenport’s first 10 points came during the second quarter, offsetting most of the 11 Briggs scored in the first four minutes.
The Indians (3-0, 1-0 CSC-II) hit three more three-pointers in the first two minute of the second half, prompting Herkimer coach Jim Babcock to call a quick timeout with his team trailing 57-31. Davenport hit four three-pointers in four minutes and pushed the margin over 30 with a three-pointer with 3:11 left in the period. Michael Sternberg’s putback on the next possession gave the Indians their largest lead at 71-38.
Herkimer scored 13 of the game’s final 14 points, nine of them on a trio of John Zaleski three-pointers.
Briggs led the Magicians with 21 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots. Tucker Vogt added 10 points.
Alex Williams had 16 points and five rebounds for West Canada Valley. Josh Sudakow added nine points, seven rebounds and two steals. Davenport had four steals and blocked four shots.
Herkimer plays on the road Friday in Dolgeville while West Canada Valley travels to Cooperstown.
