ILION, N.Y. — The central Valley Academy Thunder dominated the competition at Saturday’s Valley Duals while also putting its depth to the test.
The Thunder entered two teams in a field of five, winning the championship with the varsity starters while giving several other team members some action.
Central Valley Academy and Gouverneur were both undefeated entering their showdown in the final round and Central Valley Academy secured its team championship win a 68-18 victory. Only third-place Sherburne-Earlville scored 20 points head-to-head against the Thunder.
Central Valley Academy and Gouverneur split their first six matches with the Wildcats forfeiting at 99 pounds and the next five weights producing pins, two my the Thunder’s Hunter Shaut and Tanner Cook followed by three for Gouverneur’s Daniel Mullin and Joey and Aaron Bush.
Central Valley Academy senior Laken Cook scored a second-period technical fall against Zach Ayen at 138 pounds to break the 18-all deadlock and start a parade of Thunder wins. Gouverneur would not win another bout while Central Valley Academy recorded pins in seven of the final eight matches.
Tanner Cook was one of five Thunder wrestlers to win four matches on the day and was named Central Valley Academy’s most outstanding wrestler. He scored a major decision in his first bout and pinned his three other opponents.
Tim Rathbun and Landry Cook each pinned all of his opponents for the Thunder while Brandon Yager won twice by pin and twice by decision and John Mazza had three pins and a major decision. Mazza ended his day with a pin of Joey Love, Section X’s 125-pound champion last winter.
C.J. Walz, Shaut and Laken Cook were also undefeated with forfeits among their victories. Cook had two pins to go with his technical fall against Gouverneur. Walz and Shaut each had two pins and two forfeits at the lowest weights.
Nolan Callaghan and Nate Case shared most outstanding wrestler honors for Central Valley Academy’s B team which went winless in four duals but earned 30 points against Hannibal and 31 against Sherburne-Earlville.
The Thunder’s next match is Wednesday at home against Rome Free Academy.
