LITTLE FALLS — Willow is the winner!
After four and a half weeks of voting by Times’ readers, the black and white cat owned by Stephanie Dye, of St. Johnsville, garnered the most votes to earn the title of Pet of the Year.
Dye said Willow is about 1 1/2 years old, and she was found when she was a kitten behind Serenity Spa in Herkimer.
“She’s just such a character,” said Dye. “She is so pretty, has nice characteristics and is beautiful when she sleeps.”
Dye, who has two older cats, said she calls Willow “my little princess.”
“She runs to greet you when you get home,” said Dye. “She loves to travel and goes to camp with my family.”
The winning photo, which is of Willow sitting and looking at the camera, earned her 1,485 votes from readers out of 24 photos. Her photo will also be used for the month of January, followed by the 11 runner-ups for the rest of the calendar. Other winning photos included a horse, a cat laying on its back with paws stretched forward and four dogs lined up looking at the camera.
The contest serves as a fundraiser for the Newspapers-in-Education program, which places newspapers in classrooms throughout local school districts. Beth Brewer, publisher of The Times, said this year’s contest raised $5,200.
“We had an excellent response to this year’s contest,” said Brewer. “We were glad to have such great participation from the community for this fun event.”
